The Kerala High Court in the case Suo Motu v. State of Kerala observed and has initiated a suo moto writ plea in relation to the continuing fire at a dumping yard of Kochi Corporation in Brahmapuram.
The Division bench comprising of Justice K. Vinod Chandran and Justice C. Jayachandran was hearing the present matter.
In the present case, the smoke that billowed out of the plant spread over large areas of the city, and which could not be fully doused despite strenuous efforts over past two days.
It has been stated in the suo motu writ plea that the repeated incidents of fire at the yard remains a cause of concern for local residents, and as per reports, the plastic waste piled up at Kochi Corporation’s solid waste treatment plant has gone up in smoke without fail every year since 2019. Therefore, the authorities have not been able to take concrete action to check such mishaps, despite of repeated episodes.
It has also been submitted by the bench of Justice Devan Ramachandran a letter to the Chief Justice in this regard, seeking the Court to intervene in the matter.
