In a significant development, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge announced on Wednesday that the new Congress government would thoroughly review and potentially revise or withdraw the orders and legislations implemented under the previous Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regime. Kharge highlighted that certain measures such as school textbook revisions and anti-conversion laws, which he believed were against the state’s best interests, would be given careful consideration and subjected to necessary changes.
Addressing the growing demands to overturn the “hijab ban” from various sections of society, Minister Kharge refrained from directly commenting on the issue. However, he emphasised that the government would assess all policies enacted by the previous administration, specifically targeting those that contradicted the Constitution, impeded societal progress, and hindered inclusivity.
“We will reevaluate each policy introduced by the previous government,” Kharge stated.
Kharge further expressed the government’s intention to rescind any legislation or order that hindered the economic growth, prosperity, and well-being of the people of Karnataka. He specifically mentioned the previous government’s selective observance of birth anniversaries of prominent figures, asserting that not only these commemorations but also policies pertaining to text books, anti-cow slaughter, and anti-conversion would undergo revision.
During a press conference, the minister articulated, “All bills and orders that impede Karnataka’s economic progress, prosperity, and negatively impact the interests of Kannadigas will be withdrawn. Our aim is to restore Karnataka’s position as the leading state, and we will take the necessary steps to achieve that.”
Priyank Kharge, son of All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Mallikarjun Kharge, is one of the eight ministers recently inducted into Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s cabinet.
The Congress government’s commitment to reviewing and revising the policies of the previous administration reflects its dedication to promoting the welfare and inclusive growth of Karnataka.
