Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president Kamal Haasan has said that his party is now in a position to head a third front in the state. He also said that he is ready to join hands with regional parties other than AIADMK and DMK.

The actor-turned politician Haasan made these statements in an in-person meeting with his party district secretaries to chalk out a strategy for the Tamil Nadu assembly elections to be held in 2021. The meeting took place after the party authorized Haasan to take decisions on the outfit’s alliance ahead of the state elections.

While addressing the gathering of district secretaries, Kamal Haasan said, “People ask us whether we have the capability to be a third front? We are ready to be the third front in the State.” He also added that Tamil Nadu will be witnessing what happened in Delhi in 2013. He asked the party cadres to reach out to the people in all villages and make them understand the need for Makkal Needhi Maiam as an alternative political force.

Replying to the questions of his working in a popular reality show, he said that even though he continues to act and earns in crores, he has spent that money for the welfare of the people.

Clarifying his stand on alliance with the “Dravidian Parties”, Kamal Haasan said, “As long as the word Dravidian is there in the national anthem, Dravidian will stay and it cannot be wiped out and we will not have any alliance with the ‘Kazhagams’(DMK and AIADMK).”

Political analysts say that the space for a third front in Tamil Nadu is very much limited as most of the parties have already decided on their alliance for the 2021 assembly elections. Very few parties appear to be undecided and even if they form a third front kind of grouping, choosing a CM candidate will be challenging for that formation, they added.
