Justice Gaurang Kanth was sworn in as the Judge of the Calcutta High Court. The oath was administered by Chief Justice TS Sivagnaman.
The Transfer was notified by the Central Government from the Delhi High Court pursuant to the recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium.
The Supreme Court Collegium rejected the request for transfer to Madhya Pradesh High Court or Rajasthan High Court or any other neighbouring State on July 12, 2023.
The AG SN Mookherjee and DSG-I Billwadal Bhattacharya addressed during the swearing in ceremony wherein it has been pointed out that Justice Kanth’s induction would make him the youngest judge of the Calcutta High Court.
Further, the address was being delivered by office bearers of the Incorporated Law Society, the Bar Association and the Bar Library Club.
It has been addressed by Justice Gaurang Kanth on the legacy of the Calcutta High Court and vowed to uphold its majesty.
Justice Gaurang Kanth expressed gratitude towards his family, as well as his colleagues on the Bench, and the members of the Court.
Justice Kanth reflected on his roots in the East, the legacy of the Calcutta High Court, and reiterated the commitment of him for ensuring that justice reaches the homes of all who seek it
The Supreme Court Collegium appointed Justice Kanth as the judge of the Delhi High Court on 18.05.2022.
The court in the case observed and has noted that unhappy with the Collegium’s proposal to transfer him, the Delhi High Court Bar Association Protesting had resolved to abstain from work on July 17 as the token of protest.
