A JMIC has initiated an investigation into the purported custodial death of a farmer in Jind district, Haryana, which occurred on Monday. The deceased’s family members, claiming that the farmer died as a result of police brutality while in custody, organized a protest at the civil hospital, demanding action against the police. The protest ended only after senior officials promised a thorough investigation. Meanwhile, on February 1, the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) wing apprehended two individuals suspected of being part of a gang involved in stealing buffaloes from Safidon town in Jind.

The accused had been identified as Paramjeet alias Pummy of Malikpur village of Safidon, the victim, and Neetu, who belongs to Kamhera village of Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh.
Police officials claimed that during investigation, Paramjeet told police that one of his relatives, Angrej Singh, asked him to join the gang. Angrej Singh asked to share details of those who owning buffaloes and vulnerable to thefts. “He gave a tip off to gang members that only a caretaker stays with buffaloes at a site on Bohli-Dharamgarh road near Safidon. They attempted steal the buffaloes but people caught them,” said police.

“We met superintendent of police (SP) Sumit Kumar and urged him to examine the deceased’s body. The body bore injury marks, appearing he was thrashed by CIA team during custody. A thorough investigation needs to be conducted,” said Amritpal Singh, sarpanch of Malikpur village.

Villagers also questioned police claim about his involvement in theft, pointing out he was a farmer owing 7-acre land in village.

SP Sumit Kumar told that during the probe, the deceased admitted to his crime following which he was sent to jail.

Student cremated as police promise investigation

Two days after the alleged suicide of a 16-year-old student at Meritorious School in Sangrur, his parents finally cremated his body. The last rites were carried out after assurance from the police for a thorough probe. The parents had demanded the arrest of a schoolteacher for abetment to suicide.
