Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Jagar Prakash Nadda resigned as Rajya Sabha MP from Himachal Pradesh on Monday, following his uncontested election to the Upper House from Gujarat. Nadda was one of 57 Rajya Sabha MPs whose term was ending in April 2024.

The Rajya Sabha parliamentary bulletin confirmed Nadda’s resignation, stating, “Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, an elected member of the Council of States (Rajya Sabha), representing the State of Himachal Pradesh, resigned his seat in the Rajya Sabha and his resignation has been accepted by the Chairman, Rajya Sabha w.e.f 4th March, 2024.” JP Nadda, originally from Himachal Pradesh, has served as a Rajya Sabha member for the state since 2012.

Following Nadda’s resignation, an election was held to fill the vacant seat in Himachal Pradesh. In a closely contested election, BJP’s Harsh Mahajan won the seat after defeating Congress’s Abhishek Manu Singhvi in a draw of lots. Both candidates had secured 34 votes each, leading to Mahajan’s victory by draw of lots.
