Jonny Bairstow, an English batting wicketkeeper, returned to the crease for the first time in eight months for Yorkshire.
With his timely return, England has received a significant boost ahead of the upcoming Ashes Test series. Bairstow batted for Yorkshire’s second XI against Nottinghamshire in his first appearance since breaking his leg in September last year, and the 33-year-old looked at ease as he posted a steady 97 at Headingley.
Yorkshire finished the first day of the four-day match at 437/7 after the right-hander hit 13 fours and two massive sixes in 88 balls.
Yorkshire second XI coach Tom Smith said that “Once he got going, he looked like he’d never been away. Watching him towards the end, the way he plays the late cut, the way he drives the ball, the way he played the spinner, one shot over extra cover showed that international class.”
The unfortunate leg injury allowed young gun Harry Brook to get his chance at Test level, and the right-hander made the most of it, scoring four centuries in six Test matches.
