In response to the custodial death incident that unfolded on January 31, 2024, at Police Station Gandhi Nagar, Jammu and Kashmir Police demonstrated swift action by suspending two police officials and attaching the Station House Officer (SHO) within 24 hours of the tragic event.

The deceased, identified as Sahil Saini, son of Romesh Saini, and a resident of Nagri, Kathua, was apprehended on January 30, 2024, in connection with FIR No. 20/2024 under sections 457/380 IPC at Police Station Gandhi Nagar, Jammu. He was on a 4-day police remand following the order of the Learned 3rd Additional Munsiff Court, Jammu.
Underlining their commitment to a thorough and transparent investigation, the District Police Jammu took decisive action by suspending two officials and attaching the SHO of Gandhi Nagar to District Police Lines (DPL). Simultaneously, the District Magistrate Jammu has been requested to initiate a Magisterial Enquiry to delve into the circumstances leading to the custodial death.

Adhering to established protocols, the body of the deceased was transferred to Government Medical College (GMC), Bakshi Nagar, Jammu. A formal request has been made for the formation of a Board of Doctors to conduct an autopsy. This procedure will be carried out in the presence of an Executive Magistrate 1st Class to determine the precise cause of death.
Acknowledging public concerns, the District Police Jammu reiterates its dedication to upholding the highest standards of accountability and transparency in all law enforcement operations. The incident is currently under thorough investigation, with the authorities committed to ensuring a just resolution to this unfortunate occurrence.
