Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir, Pandurang K Pole, is optimistic about a significant increase in voter turnout during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in the Valley, citing a decline in the traditional narrative of poll boycotts orchestrated by separatist groups.
Pole highlighted the changing dynamics and improved ground situation, attributing it to proactive engagement by political parties and candidates with the electorate. He expressed confidence in witnessing a manifold increase in voter participation compared to previous elections.
“The overall atmosphere is great, and the way political parties and candidates are reaching out to the people, we expect a significant surge in voter turnout in the Valley,” stated Pole in an interview.
The improved situation has been credited to various factors, including the revocation of Article 370 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has reportedly reduced the shadow of terrorism and cross-border tensions during elections.
Furthermore, divisions within separatist factions, such as the Hurriyat Conference, along with significant changes in the political landscape due to leadership shifts and incarcerations, have contributed to evolving dynamics in the region.
Despite historical trends of low voter turnout, especially in Kashmir, recent assembly polls have shown promising signs with increased participation, reflecting a growing interest in democratic processes.
Pole emphasized the ongoing aggressive campaigning by political parties and positive public response as key factors likely to drive improved voter engagement in the Valley.
Preparations are underway to ensure security and build public confidence, particularly in areas like north Kashmir, where prominent political figures are contesting.
The upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir are expected to unfold in phases, with the final phase scheduled for May 20 in Baramulla, reflecting a transformative electoral exercise with hopes for a vibrant and participatory democratic process shaping the region’s political future.
