The Jammu and Kashmir unit of Congress paid heartfelt tributes to the late former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 106th birth anniversary this Sunday. Congress members, led by Pradesh Congress Committee president Vikar Rasool Wani, gathered at Indira Chowk to honour her memory, laying wreaths at the statue of the iconic leader.
Wani, expressing admiration for Gandhi’s courageous decisions, asserted, “The nation attained great heights due to her visionary leadership, progressing on all fronts despite facing numerous challenges.” He lamented that certain politicians with vested interests are attempting to diminish the significant contributions of Congress stalwarts, particularly the work done by the Nehru family for the country.
Highlighting his concerns, Wani accused the present BJP-led government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, of making concerted efforts to distort historical facts in a bid to divert the nation’s attention from the substantial contributions of Congress and its esteemed leaders. He emphasized the need to recognize and appreciate the pivotal role played by the party in shaping the nation’s progress.
Addressing the recent political changes in the region, Wani criticized the BJP for what he termed a “historic blunder” in disbanding and downgrading Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. He expressed deep regret that the move deprived the people of their powers and rights in an arbitrary and undemocratic manner.
Wani affirmed that his party is committed to striving for the restoration of full statehood and other constitutional safeguards for Jammu and Kashmir. He reiterated that these efforts are essential for the protection of the rights and interests of the region’s people, emphasizing the importance of preserving the democratic fabric and principles that have long been integral to the state.
