In the congested colony of Eidgah in downtown Srinagar, a pall of grief enveloped the residence of Inspector Masroor Ahmed Wani, who succumbed to critical wounds sustained in a terrorist attack while playing cricket on October 29. The 34-year-old inspector, shot by a Lashker-e-Taiba terrorist, passed away in Delhi on Thursday after a 39-day battle for life.
Wani’s wife, expecting their first child, was devastated upon receiving the tragic news. “My child became an orphan even before being born,” she lamented, highlighting the poignant impact of the loss.
The atmosphere in Eidgah was sombre as a multitude of people gathered to offer condolences to Wani’s grieving wife and family. The inspector’s residence echoed with mourning, capturing the collective sorrow of the community.According to Wani’s uncle, Ghulam Mohammad Wani, the inspector’s health had deteriorated due to a severe chest infection. Initially admitted to Soura Hospital in Srinagar, he was later shifted to Paras Hospital for further treatment and subsequently flown to AIIMS in Delhi on Wednesday.
Remembered as an amiable and compassionate individual, Inspector Masroor Ahmed Wani was known for his willingness to assist others. The tragic loss reverberated through the community, with relatives and mourners expressing their profound grief.
Ghulam Nabi Kakazgar, a relative, shared, “Masroor was very frank. He would always help people. We are very depressed. He was crazy about cricket, and cricket took his life away.”The untimely demise of Inspector Wani serves as a stark reminder of the risks and challenges faced by law enforcement personnel in the region. It underscores the sacrifices made by individuals like Wani, who dedicate their lives to maintaining peace and security in the face of adversity in Kashmir. The community mourns the loss of a beloved member, leaving an indelible mark on the collective consciousness of Eidgah.
