James Earl Jones, a towering figure in stage and screen, has passed away at the age of 93. His agent, Barry McPherson, confirmed that Jones died Monday morning at his home in New York’s Hudson Valley. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Jones, renowned for his deep, commanding voice, made a significant impact across various fields. His career spanned decades, during which he won two Emmys, a Golden Globe, two Tony Awards, a Grammy, the National Medal of Arts, and the Kennedy Center Honors. He also received an honorary Oscar and a special Tony for lifetime achievement. In 2022, a Broadway theater was renamed in his honor.

Jones broke new ground in 1965 as one of the first African American actors to secure a continuing role on daytime drama with “As the World Turns.” His memorable roles include the reclusive writer in Field of Dreams, the boxer Jack Johnson in The Great White Hope, and the writer Alex Haley in Roots: The Next Generation. He also voiced iconic characters such as Darth Vader in Star Wars and King Mufasa in The Lion King.

Born in Arkabutla, Mississippi, on January 17, 1931, Jones overcame a severe stutter and early life challenges to become a celebrated actor. He made his Broadway debut in 1958 and continued to perform with remarkable dedication until late in his life. His influence on acting and his contributions to both theater and film remain unparalleled. Jones is survived by his son, Flynn Earl Jones, from his marriage to actress Cecilia Hart.
