On Thursday, Minister for External Affairs S Jaishankar responded to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s concerns regarding the detention of Indian fishermen in Sri Lanka. Jaishankar acknowledged that 34 Indian fishermen are currently under judicial remand in Sri Lanka, with six others already serving sentences. He emphasized the proactive efforts by the Indian High Commission in Colombo and the Consulate in Jaffna to expedite their release.
“The genesis of this issue dates back to 1974, stemming from an understanding between the Union Government and the State Government,” Jaishankar wrote in his response to Stalin. Since assuming office in 2014, Jaishankar noted, the NDA government has prioritized addressing the livelihood interests and humanitarian aspects affecting the fishing community. He reassured that these efforts encompass various dimensions, including engagement with the Sri Lankan government.
Stalin had previously written three letters to Jaishankar urging swift action for the release of fishermen apprehended by Sri Lanka, highlighting the disruptive impact on their livelihoods and the coastal communities’ anxieties.
“These incidents not only disrupt the livelihoods of the fishermen but also instill a sense of fear and uncertainty among their families and the entire coastal communities,” Stalin emphasized in his correspondence.
Jaishankar assured Stalin that the welfare and security of Indian fishermen remain paramount, reaffirming India’s commitment to resolving these issues through diplomatic channels.
The ongoing efforts underscore the complexities surrounding maritime disputes and bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka, with a focus on ensuring the well-being of affected communities.
