Munir Khan, the brother of incarcerated separatist leader Mr. Nayeem Khan, has entered the political fray by filing his nomination papers for the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency, slated for polls in the fifth phase on May 20.
Nayeem Khan, the former head of the Jammu Kashmir National Front, was arrested on July 24, 2017, in connection with a terror-related case, leading to the banning of the organization under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Munir Khan, aligned with the Jammu Kashmir Nationalist People’s Front Party, established two years ago, submitted his nomination papers to Baramulla Deputy Commissioner Minga Sherpa, who serves as the returning officer for the constituency.
Notable contenders in the electoral race include former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah, People’s Conference President and former separatist-turned-mainstream politician Sajad Lone, former Rajya Sabha MP and PDP leader Mir Fayaz, and former MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, who is currently incarcerated.
The deadline for filing nominations from the seat is May 3, with polling scheduled to take place on May 20. The contest for the Baramulla Lok Sabha constituency promises to be closely watched, reflecting the diverse political landscape of the region amid the backdrop of recent developments and ongoing political transitions.
