Cricket commentator Isa Guha apologized for calling Indian bowler Jasprit Bumrah the “most valuable primate.” She made the remark during the third Test against Australia in Brisbane on Sunday. The comment triggered a backlash online due to the word’s history as a racial slur.
While commentating for Fox Sports, Guha spoke with Brett Lee and Allan Border about Bumrah’s exceptional start. Brett Lee praised Bumrah, saying, “Bumrah, today: five overs, 2-4. So, that’s the tone, and that’s what you want from the ex-skipper.”
Guha responded, “Well, he’s the MVP, isn’t he? [The] most valuable primate, Jasprit Bumrah. He is the one that’s going to do all the talking for India, and why so much focus was on him in the build-up to this Test match, and whether he would be fit.”
Her remark quickly sparked criticism on social media. Many highlighted the offensive undertones of the word, linking it to its use as a racial slur.
The next day, Guha addressed the controversy on air. She said, “Yesterday in commentary, I used a word that can be interpreted in a number of different ways. I’d like to apologise for any offence caused.”
She explained her intention was to praise Bumrah’s contributions to the team. “I only meant the highest praise for one of India’s greatest players, someone I admire greatly,” Guha said. She admitted to choosing the wrong word and expressed deep regret.
“As someone of South Asian heritage, I hope people understand there was no malice or bad intent behind my comment,” she added.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri praised Guha for taking responsibility. “People are entitled to make mistakes. We are all human. To own up and say, ‘I’m sorry’ … it takes courage. She’s done it,” Shastri said. He urged the Indian team to stay focused on the Test match and move on from the issue.
The incident reignited discussions about racism in cricket. In 2007-08, Andrew Symonds accused India’s Harbhajan Singh of calling him a “monkey” during a match.
Last year, an independent report revealed widespread racism, sexism, classism, and elitism in English and Welsh cricket. This highlighted the ongoing need to address discrimination in the sport.
Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah continued to impress. On Monday, he claimed his sixth wicket of the innings, further solidifying his value to the Indian team.
Guha’s apology has helped ease tensions. The Indian team remains focused on the game, while the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of thoughtful language in cricket commentary.
