Mars, one of Earth’s closest space neighbors, has long fueled human curiosity about the possibility of extraterrestrial life. While no such life has been discovered yet, robotic missions by NASA and other space agencies have been capturing images of unusual formations on the Red Planet, sparking both excitement and speculation among scientists and space enthusiasts.
From shapes resembling an open book, a teddy bear’s face, frozen mineral blooms, mysterious doorways, and fossil-like animal tracks, Mars continues to present intriguing objects that seem oddly out of place on a barren, dusty planet.
According to Science Alert, a recent image captured by NASA‘s Perseverance rover is one of the eeriest yet: it resembles “a desiccated, decaying human head, severed from any body, just withering away under the harsh light of the Sun.”
The Mars Perseverance rover snapped this photo using its Right Mastcam-Z camera on September 27, 2024 (Sol 1282), at 11:50:05 local solar time. The formation appears to be a chunk of sedimentary sandstone, common in areas of Mars where water once likely flowed, as reported by Science Alert.
