West Asia is simmering. Tensions between Iran and Israel have escalated over the last few weeks after Iran fired around 300 drones, missiles targeting Israel; in what they call a retaliatory attack for Israeli strike on their consulate in Damascus. With the longstanding proxy wars, shadow conflicts and geopolitical shocks, the flare can also cast a shadow on the global economy. In an exclusive conversation with The Daily Guardian, Iraj Elahi Iran’s Ambassador to India* decodes the relationship with India and the current situation of conflict in the region.
Q. What is the current situation between Iran and Israel?
A: As the massacre in Gaza continues, the situation in West asia is turbulent Israel is the main cause of instability in the region and the genocide going on is the main point of concern for the whole region. We believe that support of US and other allies of Israel should stop the blood shedding in Gaza and after that whole region will be secured.
Q. Iran shot 300 drones, missiles targeting Israel in a retaliatory measure for the attack by Israel on their consulate in Damascus. Is Iran looking forward to de-escalation measures with Israel?
A: Iran was obliged to carry out a military operation. We wanted de-escalation as Iran never wanted escalation of tensions. We have sent a strong message and believe that Israel and allies have received Iran’s signal but the focal point of concern still remains which is Gaza. What’s happening in Gaza is concerning and of a humanitarian crisis.
Q. Strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway for oil shipments, if the tensions flare up, will it lead to the closure of the crucial chokepoint?
A: Iran is the anchor of peace and stability and the safety of transit of oil in the Persian Gulf. We will ensure the safety and stability in the Persian gulf.
Q. How do you look at the relations with India?
A: The ties with India are historical, in different fields like culture and economics. Steps have been taken from both the sides. Chabbar port is a key milestone of our relation, very soon the main contract will be signed.
