The Indian Newspaper Society (INS) on Friday welcomed the Lok Sabha passing the Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023.
“This momentous occasion marks a step towards modernizing the regulatory framework governing the press in India by replacing the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867,” said Rakesh Sharma, president of INS.

The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023 addresses the evolving needs of the print media industry in the digital age. The efforts of lawmakers in recognizing the importance of updating legislation to meet contemporary challenges faced by the “vibrant and dynamic print media” deserve appreciation, said a release by the INS.
“The INS is committed to working closely with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting during the subsequent stages of the legislative process, contributing insights to further refine the regulatory framework,” Sharma said.
