According to police, an engineering student committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her college hostel in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district.

Deepti Mandaloi, a resident of Gogaon in Khargone district, was a first-year electrical engineering student at Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS). “Deepti was a first-year Electrical Branch student,” college director Rakesh Saxena told the media. She received ATKT in five subjects in the first semester exams a few days ago.”

ATKT is an abbreviation for Allowed To Keep Terms. It is a procedure in the Indian education system that allows students in the pre-graduation and graduation grades to continue their studies in the next grade if they have failed one to four subjects. Regardless, the students must pass the papers they failed before moving on to the next grade.

“When Deepti’s room partner returned to the room on Thursday around 11:30 am, she found that the door was locked. While peeping through the door, she saw Deepti had already hanged herself. After that we informed the police and family members,” he added.

The sub inspector of Tukoganj police station Shailendra Agarwal said, “A B.tech student, Dipti Mandloi, committed suicide by hanging herself. She was living in the Sarojini Naidu Girls Hostel of SGSITS College. Deepti got ATKT in five subjects which she had mentioned in her diary.”

She most likely took her own life as a result of her depression. Nonetheless, the truth will be revealed following the investigation and postmortem, he added.
