India’s performance at the Hangzhou Asian Games has created a remarkable chapter in the nation’s sporting history. The 660-strong Indian contingent returned home with a record haul of 107 medals, which included 28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze. This outstanding achievement marks a significant leap from the 2018 Jakarta Games, with India securing 37 more medals in Hangzhou.
What makes this achievement even more impressive is the excellence displayed in disciplines like shooting and archery, where India delivered its best-ever performances. Shooting contributed the most gold medals, with seven, while athletics added six golds to the tally. Archery, which had garnered only two silver medals in the previous edition, stunned everyone with nine medals, including five gold.
The success story of India’s compound archers deserves special mention as they secured all five gold medals. Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Ojas Pravin Deotale emerged as the stars with three gold medals each, becoming the top gold medalists among Indian athletes.
India also saw historic victories in athletics, as Avinash Sable, Annu Rani, and Parul Chaudhary secured gold medals in their respective events. The men’s 4x400m relay team achieved a milestone by winning gold after a gap of 61 years. Shooting was another standout discipline, with seven gold, nine silver, and six bronze medals. Notably, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Esha Singh were the top medalists among Indian athletes in various sports.
This stellar performance in Hangzhou follows India’s impressive medal haul at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It not only cements India’s status as a rising sporting powerhouse but also fuels hope for an even stronger showing at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The global presence of Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra served as an inspiration for the entire contingent.
While there were some disappointments, such as Lovlina Borgohain’s silver and Mirabai Chanu’s fourth-place finish, these were minor setbacks in a spectacular 15 days of sporting action.
Athletics, shooting and archery lead medal count
Athletics and shooting were the standout sports for India at the Hangzhou Asian Games, contributing a total of 51 medals, including 13 golds. Shooting led the way with seven golds, while athletics added six golds.
