In a thrilling display of wrestling prowess, Indian wrestlers delivered outstanding performances to secure bronze medals at the 19th Asian Games. Sonam Malik, Aman Sehrawat, and Kiran brought honour to India with their remarkable victories.
Young Indian wrestler Sonam Malik faced a spirited challenge from China’s Jia Long in the women’s 62kg category. In a nail-biting bout, both wrestlers were locked at 4-4, with the Chinese athlete ahead on criteria. However, with just 25 seconds remaining in the bronze play-off, Sonam executed a crucial takedown move to emerge victorious with a score of 7-5. This win marked India’s third wrestling bronze medal at the Games, with Sunil Kumar (Greco Roman) and Antim Panghal (women’s 53kg) having secured earlier medals. Later in the day, Kiran (women’s 76kg), Aman Sehrawat (men’s 57kg), and Bajrang Punia (men’s 65kg) would also strive to add more bronze medals to India’s tally.
In another remarkable achievement, Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat displayed a power-packed performance in the men’s freestyle 57Kg category. He faced China’s Minghu Liu and secured an impressive 11-0 victory by technical superiority. Aman quickly took control of the match with well-executed takedowns, leaving his opponent bewildered. A passivity warning was issued to the Chinese wrestler, but he failed to gain any points against Aman’s defense. Aman’s dominant performance included another comfortable takedown, securing a podium finish for India. This victory marked India’s fifth wrestling medal, all of which were bronze, in Hangzhou.
Indian wrestler Kiran also delivered a solid performance in the women’s freestyle 76kg category. She clinched a bronze medal by defeating Mongolia’s Ariunjargal Ganbat with a score of 3-0. Kiran started the match strong by pushing her opponent out of bounds. Despite facing some challenges and losing a few points, Kiran displayed resilience and executed crucial takedowns, extending her lead to four points.
