Two Indian Navy women officers are set to embark on a remarkable sailing expedition to circumnavigate the globe, as announced by the Indian Navy. The expedition’s logo has been unveiled, featuring an octagonal shape representing the Indian Navy, with the Sun symbolizing a celestial body and the compass guiding the sailors through the challenging seas.
The Indian Navy has been actively revitalizing its sailing tradition, focusing on preserving maritime heritage and promoting seamanship skills. Through the pioneering efforts of Sail Training Ships INS Tarangini and INS Sudarshini, along with circumnavigation missions onboard INSVs Mhadei and Tarini, the Navy has taken a prominent role in ocean sailing expeditions.
Continuing this celebration of maritime skill and adventure, two women officers—Lieutenant Commander Roopa A and Lieutenant Commander Dilna K—are set to embark on an extraordinary expedition called Navika Sagar Parikrama II, sailing onboard INSV Tarini. They have been preparing for this journey for the past three years.
Last year, the officers participated as part of a six-member crew in a trans-oceanic expedition from Goa to Rio de Janeiro via Cape Town and back. They subsequently undertook a sailing expedition from Goa to Port Blair and back in double-handed mode. Additionally, the duo successfully completed a sortie from Goa to Port Louis, Mauritius, again in dual-handed mode earlier this year.
The Sagar Parikrama voyage will be a demanding journey, requiring extreme skills, physical fitness, and mental alertness. The officers have been rigorously training and have gained thousands of miles of sailing experience. They are also being mentored by accomplished circumnavigator and Golden Globe Race hero, Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd.), KC, NM.
