In a disturbing case of medical negligence, a woman in Rajasthan endured months of severe stomach pain after a surgical towel was left inside her abdomen during a C-section. The incident, which has raised serious concerns about medical practices in the region, came to light after the woman sought treatment at Jodhpur’s AIIMS hospital.

The incident occurred at a government hospital in Kuchaman, located in Rajasthan’s Didwana-Kuchaman district, where the woman underwent a Caesarean section three months ago. During the procedure, a towel was mistakenly left inside her abdomen. While her stitches healed, the woman continued to experience ongoing pain, but doctors were unable to identify the cause.

The woman sought medical attention at various hospitals in Makrana and Ajmer, but no diagnosis could be made. After a CT scan in Ajmer suggested a lump in her stomach, the family took her to Jodhpur AIIMS for further investigation. There, doctors discovered the surgical towel lodged in her abdomen, which had become entangled in her intestines. The woman underwent surgery to remove the foreign object, alleviating her pain, but not before the ordeal caused her significant distress.

The discovery has caused turmoil among the medical staff in Didwana district. The surgical towel removed from the woman’s stomach has been sent for examination as part of an ongoing investigation into the incident.

The woman’s family has approached the Rajasthan High Court, claiming that the prolonged pain prevented her from breastfeeding her newborn, forcing the baby to be fed formula milk, which raised concerns about potential malnutrition. In response, Didwana’s Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO), Dr. Anil Judia, has set up a three-member committee to investigate the case. The committee is expected to present its findings by Monday, November 25.
