Telangana: Medical College Faculty Booked for Forcing Student’s Head Tonsure

A faculty member of Khammam Government Medical College in Telangana has been booked for allegedly forcing a first-year student to have his head tonsured.

According to police, the student arrived at the college with a “Chinese-style” haircut, prompting seniors in the hostel to criticize the hairstyle as inappropriate for a medical student and suggest trimming it. The matter reached an assistant professor, who also serves as the Boys’ Hostel Anti-Ragging Committee Officer. The professor reportedly took the student to a barber shop and compelled him to shave his head.

The incident, which occurred on November 12, has drawn widespread criticism. In response, college authorities have relieved the assistant professor of hostel duties and reported the matter to the Director of Medical Education.

Police have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, and the Anti-Ragging Act. Investigations are ongoing.
