In a touching gesture, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, during a public rally in Delhi’s Najafgarh area on Thursday, declined a silver crown offered to him by a BJP leader and instead proposed that it be repurposed into anklets for the wedding of a girl from an economically disadvantaged family.
During his visit to campaign for BJP candidate Kamaljeet Sehrawat in the Najafgarh area under the West Delhi parliamentary constituency, Singh was greeted with a silver crown. He suggested that instead of keeping it, the crown should be sold after the Lok Sabha elections, and the proceeds used to make anklets for a girl from a poor family who is getting married. The silver crown was presented by former BJP legislator Ajeet Singh Kharkhari.
In his speech at the public rally, Singh strongly criticized Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, stating, “We had heard a lot about work-from-home and work-from-office, but because of Kejriwal, we also heard about work-from-jail for the first time.” He further accused Kejriwal of bringing disgrace to the people of Delhi by being the first Chief Minister to go to jail in a corruption case.
Singh also targeted the ‘INDIA’ bloc of opposition parties, including the Congress, stating, “There is an alliance in Delhi, while in Punjab both the parties are fighting against each other.” He alleged that Kejriwal had betrayed his mentor Anna Hazare and questioned his credibility.
Regarding the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in Delhi, Singh highlighted the fierce competition between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the INDIA bloc, comprising the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress. He noted that all seven parliamentary seats in Delhi would witness a heated contest between the two blocs.
The AAP and Congress are contesting the elections in an alliance in Delhi, with the AAP fielding candidates in four seats and the Congress in three. The seven parliamentary constituencies in Delhi are Chandni Chowk, East Delhi, New Delhi, North East Delhi, North West Delhi, South Delhi, and West Delhi.
The first five phases of polling took place on April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, and May 20. The remaining two rounds of voting are scheduled for May 25 and June 1, with vote counting and result declaration set for June 4.
