Rail blockage and road protestors lifted as Tripura CM addresses Kokborok Roman Script issues

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha successfully managed a major crisis as supporters of the TISF, a student wing of the opposition TIPRA MOTHA party, blocked critical transportation arteries, including national highways and railway lines. The blockades caused widespread disruption and anxiety by isolating Tripura.

The blockades were an escalation of the TISF and Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) demand for the recognition of the Roman script for the Kokborok language in educational assessments. This demand gained momentum after statements by Dhananjoy Gon Choudhury, President of the Tripura Board of Secondary Education.

Protesters, using logs and burning tires, paralyzed transportation, demanding immediate action. CM Saha engaged in discussions with central and tribal leaders to address the students’ future. After intense deliberation, a landmark decision was reached to permit the use of the Roman script for Kokborok language exams.

Cabinet Minister Sushanta Chaudhury announced the decision at a press conference, addressing a deeply rooted cultural issue in the state. CM Saha reassured the public earlier in the day, expressing confidence in reaching a resolution. By evening, the crisis was defused, with TIPRA Motha party leaders thanking the Chief Minister and BJP leadership for the historic resolution.
