Manipur violence: People come out of home to buy essentials after 3-hour relaxation in curfew

The Manipur government decided to relax the curfew in the state, nearly a week after the clashes that started on 3 May. People thronged to markets and shops to buy the essential items.

The curfew was relaxed for just three hours, from 7 am to 10 am in the Imphal Valley. Images were unveiled in which it was shown that people came out of their respective houses in huge numbers. The curfew was imposed under Section 144 of the CrPC.

As per the report, about 60 people have already lost their lives in the clash that took place in several parts of the state.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday urged people to maintain peace at any cost. He also assured that a high-level inquiry would be conducted to arrest those who were responsible for the violence.

Manipur was boiling due to ethnic clashes, and the state CM thanked Amit Shah for sending central forces to contain the violence and bring the situation back to normal.

He further added that the best possible facilities were being provided for the stranded people.

The Manipur CM added, “Around 60 people have lost their lives so far, while 231 have suffered injuries in the violence. Also, about 1,700 houses were burned down in the unfortunate incidents (rioting) on 3 May. I appeal to the people to restore peace and calm to the state.” He also appealed to the people not to block or obstruct the movement of public transport.
