The Telangana government announced on Wednesday a one-year ban on the production, storage, and sale of mayonnaise prepared from raw eggs, with immediate effect, following reports linking it to cases of food poisoning. This directive was issued by the state’s Commissioner of Food Safety in response to growing health concerns.

The official order highlighted, “As per observations during enforcement activities and complaints received from the public, mayonnaise made from raw eggs is suspected to be a cause of food poisoning in multiple incidents over the past few months.”

Mayonnaise, commonly referred to as mayo, is a thick, creamy sauce created by emulsifying egg yolks with oil, often enhanced with vinegar or lemon juice for flavor. It is widely used as a side dish or dressing in various foods, including sandwiches, salads, appetizers, snacks, shawarma, and other dishes.
