GlobalFoundries to Launch Semiconductor Hub in Kolkata

West Bengal is set to host a significant semiconductor investment following an announcement by U.S. President Joe Biden and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The project involves the establishment of a Global Capability Centre by GlobalFoundries in Kolkata, marking a major leap in India-U.S. defense and technology cooperation. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee emphasized the state’s role in securing this investment, highlighting long-standing efforts by the government and the tech ecosystem in Kolkata to attract major semiconductor players, positioning the state as a key destination for tech industries.

In her social media post, Banerjee highlighted the state’s relentless efforts in securing the landmark semiconductor investment. She underscored how the State IT Department and PSU Webel worked tirelessly to attract major semiconductor companies, especially after the pandemic, when many chip-designing startups relocated to IT parks in Kolkata. These efforts included hosting technology symposiums and promoting West Bengal as an attractive destination for knowledge-based industries.

Banerjee also noted that the 2024 State-sponsored Global VLSI Conference played a pivotal role in advancing talks with GlobalFoundries and other leading firms. The culmination of these discussions has now resulted in the establishment of the Global Capability Centre in Kolkata, a key investment that is set to position the state as a hub for high-tech manufacturing and semiconductor development. She emphasized her government’s commitment to supporting this initiative, ensuring it helps West Bengal become a global destination for advanced technology sectors.
