Vice Chancellor Prof. Yogesh Singh hoisted the flag at the University of Delhi on the 78th Independence Day, highlighting India’s significant progress over the past 77 years. He noted, “India has made remarkable strides since independence. Recently, our economy has surpassed Britain’s to become the fifth-largest globally.”

Prof. Singh emphasized that India has now outpaced Britain in economic, political, social, and technological spheres. He described this year as pivotal for India’s development and pledged to reinforce the nation’s foundation.

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor honored the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the country, distinguishing between independence and freedom. He reminded the audience that while India gained independence on August 15, 1947, the Constitution came into effect on January 26, 1950.

He also discussed recent legal reforms, stating, “Since July 1, three new laws (Bhartiye Nyay Samhita 2023, Bhartiye Nagrik Suraksha 2023, and Bhartiye Sakshiye Adhiniyam 2023) have been implemented nationwide.”

Reflecting on India’s historical economic context, Prof. Singh mentioned that before British rule, India held a 17 percent share of the world economy, exporting finished goods rather than raw materials. British colonial policies shifted this, leading to the closure of Indian industries and the establishment of factories in England.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted the importance of a strong central system, citing historical figures like Chanakya and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who advocated for such a system. He expressed gratitude to Dr. Ambedkar for laying the groundwork for a robust central government in independent India.

Ending his address, Prof. Singh encouraged everyone to contribute to the “Viksit Bharat” campaign, aiming to make India a developed nation by 2047.

During the ceremony, Dean Ranking and principals of various colleges were honored with certificates for their excellent performance in the NIRF Ranking 2024. NCC cadets performed a parade, and students from the Department of Music and Fine Arts presented patriotic songs. The event was attended by Director of South Delhi Campus Prof. Prakash Singh, Dean of Colleges Prof. Balaram Pani, Director of SOL Prof. Payal Mago, Registrar Dr. Vikas Gupta, along with other Deans, Heads of Departments, officers, teachers, staff, and students.
