West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar has called for an end to atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, emphasizing the need for India’s support to help the neighboring country overcome its economic challenges. He stated, “For the development of Bangladesh, the situation in the country should improve. The atrocities which are being committed against the Hindus in Bangladesh should be stopped… Bangladesh needs the support of India to come out of the economic strain.”

Majumdar’s remarks come amid reports of attacks on Hindu temples and individuals in Bangladesh, with allegations that such actions are being perpetrated by governmental forces rather than communal groups. He noted, “The situation in Bangladesh is very bad. Hindu temples and Hindus are being attacked one after the other. It is not that the public is attacking or some communal force. The government is doing it.”

In a related development, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri arrived in Dhaka on Monday to engage in discussions with Bangladeshi officials. This visit marks the first high-level engagement since the interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, assumed office in August 2024. The talks are expected to address a range of bilateral issues, including the safety and welfare of minorities, particularly in light of the recent arrest of Hindu spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das.

Majumdar also highlighted the economic interdependence between India and Bangladesh, asserting that improved bilateral relations are crucial for regional stability and prosperity. He stressed that addressing human rights concerns is essential for fostering a conducive environment for economic collaboration.

The international community, including India’s Ministry of External Affairs, has expressed concern over the increasing violence against minority communities in Bangladesh. The Ministry urged Bangladesh to ensure the safety and security of all its citizens, emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic values and human rights.

As diplomatic efforts continue, stakeholders on both sides are hopeful for constructive dialogue leading to tangible actions that will safeguard minority rights and strengthen economic ties between India and Bangladesh.
