Kashmir: Senior BJP leader and J&K spokesperson, Altaf Thakur, has endorsed the new J&K budget presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, calling it a comprehensive and visionary document aimed at widespread development and welfare.
Thakur lauded the allocation of Rs. 9400 crore for power subsidies and purchases from the national grid, describing it as a crucial move for ensuring a stable electricity supply in J&K. He highlighted that the budget’s focus on infrastructure development is evidenced by the Rs. 3983 crore earmarked for road and bridge construction under various schemes.
The education sector, Thakur noted, will benefit significantly from the Rs. 1875 crore designated for the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, career counseling services, and the establishment of modern schools through PM SHRI funding. “This will address the long-standing demands for improved education infrastructure in the region,” he stated.
Further emphasizing decentralized governance, Thakur pointed to the Rs. 1808 crore allocated for local area development through PRIs, ULBs, BDCs, and DDCs. “This will empower local representatives and enhance ground-level governance,” he said. The budget also includes Rs. 1714 crore for providing tap water in rural areas under the Jal Jeevan Mission, aiming to ensure accessible drinking water.
In urban development, Thakur highlighted Rs. 1484 crore for the completion of Smart City projects in Srinagar and Jammu, infrastructure projects under the Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project, and the development of sewerage treatment plants and new townships. “These initiatives are a major step towards modernizing urban areas,” he remarked.
Social security measures in the budget, including Rs. 1430 crore for old age, widow, and disabled assistance schemes, as well as women empowerment programs like Ladli Beti and Marriage Assistance schemes, received Thakur’s appreciation for providing relief to vulnerable populations.
The health sector is set to receive a boost with Rs. 1317 crore allocated for infrastructure and services under the National Health Mission. Thakur also emphasized the importance of Rs. 1021 crore for the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP), which includes a five-year outlay of Rs. 5013 crore aimed at transforming agriculture and allied sectors, developing cold storage, and promoting high-density plantation.
Thakur underscored the Rs. 776 crore for equity support in hydro-electric projects at Ratle, Kawar, and Kiru, ensuring stable revenue and cheaper power. Additionally, Rs. 401 crore for the development of Dal Lake, afforestation, wildlife management, and protected area preservation reflects the budget’s environmental foresight.
In conclusion, Thakur commended the budget for its balanced and inclusive approach, catering to various sectors and sections of society, ultimately aiming at the holistic development of Jammu and Kashmir.
