In a significant development in the Bijoy Bhunia abduction and murder case in West Bengal, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has apprehended an absconding accused from Pune, Maharashtra.
The accused, Mohan Mondal, was arrested by the NIA on Thursday in connection with the case, which dates back to May 2023, according to the agency.
Bijoy Krishna Bhunia was abducted and murdered in Goramahal village, Moyna, located in the Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal. Mohan Mondal had been on the run, with non-bailable warrants issued against him.
Mondal is the third person to be arrested in the case. Two other suspects, identified as Naba Kumar Mondal and Suvendu Bhowmick, were previously taken into custody.
The NIA took over the investigation from Moyna police following a directive from the High Court of Calcutta, issued on April 5, 2024.
The agency stated that it is continuing its probe to uncover the full conspiracy behind Bhunia’s abduction and murder and to apprehend the remaining fugitives involved in the case.
