Ajit Pawar Skips PM Modi’s Rally, Sparking Controversy in Maharashtra

In Maharashtra, NCP leader Ajit Pawar’s decision not to attend Prime Minister Modi’s rally in Mumbai has stirred controversy. Ajit Pawar, who is Sharad Pawar’s nephew, opted out of the event, fueling speculation about his relationship with the ruling coalition. His absence gives the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition an opening to criticize the BJP-led government in Maharashtra.

Recently, Ajit Pawar made a statement implying that discussions between BJP, NCP, and Shiv Sena were held in 2019 regarding government formation and even hinted that industrialist Adani was involved. This ongoing political rift within the Pawar family and between Maharashtra’s political players appears far from over. While some attribute his absence at the rally to his campaign obligations, others see it as a symbolic stance in the high-stakes November 23 elections.

The BJP faces tough competition from the Shiv Sena, Shinde-led Sena faction, NCP under Sharad Pawar, and Congress, all fighting to establish their hold over Maharashtra. Ajit Pawar’s recent moves have suggested he may be pursuing a distinct political agenda, aiming to strengthen his ties with minority communities and emphasizing his support for them. He has also prominently featured Sharad Pawar’s image in his campaign, a move that drew criticism from his uncle’s faction.

In the past, Ajit Pawar has admitted that his decision to join the government strained family ties, particularly after his wife ran against Sharad Pawar’s daughter, Supriya Sule, in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. As Ajit Pawar’s independence grows, his actions continue to make headlines and are likely to remain a focal point in Maharashtra’s political landscape leading up to the elections.
