Sukhpal Singh Khaira, a Congress MLA, was arrested on Friday, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sushil Gupta claimed that Khaira joined the Congress for political safety in order to avoid being detained. In connection with a 2015 drug smuggling case, Khaira was detained at his home earlier on Thursday and later committed to a two-day police remand by Fazlika’s Jalalabad court. Khaira has been placed in police custody until September 30 by Fazlika’s Jalalabad court.
“Sukhpal Singh Khaira joined Congress for political protection so that he doesn’t get arrested…For somebody who’s involved in drugs, why would Congress think of letting Khaira join the party despite what local units say?” AAP MP said.
He further said, “Rahul Gandhi himself is against drugs. If he is against drugs then why would they think of letting such a person join.”
Outside the Fazilka CIA office, where they were not permitted to meet Khaira, Congress workers gathered under the leadership of Punjab party leader Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Partap Singh Bajwa. Partap Singh Bajwa, the leader of the opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, declared that they would fight the AAP party’s vendetta both legally and on the streets after being denied permission to meet Congress MLA Sukhpal Khaira in Fazilka.
