Over the past 24 hours, there has been a noticeable multiplication in the number of new Covid cases throughout India, with Kerala accounting for the majority of them. According to data from the Union Health Ministry, there were 423 cases reported in total, 266 of which were from Kerala and 70 from nearby Karnataka. Kerala reported two deaths. 3,420 Covid-19 cases were reported to be active nationwide.
As worries about the new coronavirus variant grow, former chief scientist of the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, has stated that there is now no reason to worry because this variant is of interest rather than alarm. She did, however, advise individuals to exercise caution and take the appropriate safety precautions.
The former Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, exclusively spoke to ANI, saying, “We need to be cautious, but we don’t need to worry because we don’t have any data to suggest that this variant JN.1 is more severe or that it’s going to cause more pneumonia, more death.”Not to be confused with its parent lineage BA.2.86, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has designated JN.1 as a variation of interest. Still, the global health organisation emphasised that, according to available data, the overall risk associated with JN.1 is still low.
