IMD Forecasts Heavy Rainfall in Odisha, Orange Warning Issued for Northeastern Districts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a weather alert on Sunday, predicting heavy rainfall in Odisha over the next three days due to a trough extending from South Uttar Pradesh to the Bay of Bengal.

Bhubaneswar IMD Director Manorama Mohanty informed, “A trough extending from South Uttar Pradesh to the Bay of Bengal at 1.5 km above sea level is expected to bring heavy rainfall to Odisha, with some areas possibly experiencing very heavy rainfall.”

The IMD also forecasted light to moderate rainfall across most parts of the state over the next 24 hours. In the past 24 hours, six locations reported very heavy rainfall, with Bamra in Sambalpur receiving the highest amount at 167.8 mm. Other areas experienced light to moderate rainfall.

Mohanty added, “Several places have recorded light to moderate rainfall. Six locations saw very heavy rainfall, while three locations recorded heavy rainfall, with Bamra in Sambalpur receiving the highest at 167.8 mm.”

An orange warning has been issued for the northeastern districts of Odisha, including Mayurbhanj, Kendujhar, Dhenkanal, Angul, Jajapur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur.

The IMD’s statement also predicts heavy rainfall in the state until August 27, with fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall expected over East and Northeast India throughout the week. Isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated for the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on the 27th, West Bengal and Sikkim on the 26th, Bihar on the 26th and 27th, Jharkhand from the 25th to 27th, Odisha on the 26th, Arunachal Pradesh on the 24th, 28th, 29th, and 30th August, and Assam & Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura throughout the week. Isolated very heavy rainfall is also likely over Gangetic West Bengal on the 24th and 26th, Odisha and Jharkhand on the 24th, Assam & Meghalaya on the 25th, Mizoram & Tripura on the 24th, 26th, and 27th August, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall expected over Tripura and Mizoram on the 26th August.
