Ahead of the highly anticipated India versus Pakistan clash in the ICC T20 World Cup on June 9, security measures will be intensified at New York’s Eisenhower Park stadium due to reported threats to the match, according to ESPNCricinfo. The governor’s office stated that while the situation is being closely monitored, there is currently no credible threat to public safety.
Eisenhower Park Stadium, situated 25 miles east of Manhattan, will host eight ICC T20 World Cup matches from June 3 to 12, including the highly awaited match between the two Asian rivals. Governor Kathy Hochul of New York assured that law enforcement authorities are working diligently to ensure the smooth conduct of these games.
“I have directed the New York State Police to implement elevated security measures, which include an increased law enforcement presence, advanced surveillance, and thorough screening processes,” Governor Hochul said, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo. “Public safety is my top priority, and we are committed to ensuring the Cricket World Cup is a safe, enjoyable experience.”
Authorities have found no corroborative evidence to substantiate the reported threat. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has affirmed that robust security measures will be in place throughout the tournament across all venues.
An ICC spokesperson emphasized, “The safety and security of everyone at the event is our number one priority. We have a comprehensive and robust security plan and work closely with authorities in our host countries. We continually monitor and evaluate the global landscape to ensure appropriate plans are in place to mitigate any identified risks.”
India will play four games in the US, starting with their campaign opener against Ireland on June 5, followed by the match against Pakistan on June 9, against the USA on June 12, and the final group stage game against Canada in Florida on June 15.
The Indian team has been training in New York since Tuesday, although star batter Virat Kohli has not yet joined them as he is on a break following a successful Indian Premier League (IPL) season for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), where he secured the Orange Cap for most runs with 741 runs in 15 games.
Earlier this month, the ICC and Cricket West Indies, co-hosts of the World Cup along with the US, reassured fans that all possible measures are being taken to ensure the safety of both fans and players during the tournament.
