The Kalapather Police in Hyderabad on Monday arrested Mohd. Sufiyan for allegedly raping a minor girl on the night of May 30. His arrest came after the police received a complaint against him from the mother of the victim. This is the third rape involving minor girls that has rocked the capital city of Telangana state in a week.
According to the complaint, who was working as a sales girl with a cloth store, Sufiyan befriended the girl at the Charminar bust stop, took her to his residence in Langer House area on Ring and raped her twice that night. The next morning the accused dropped her to the cloth store where she worked and even shared his phone number. Her mother came to know about it when the girl complained about severe abdominal pain on June 5.
The police has arrested the accused and registered a case against him under sections 363 and 376(2)(n) of the IPC and sections 5(l) r/w 6(1) and (2) of the POCSO Act.
On the intervening night of May 31 an 11-year-old girl was gangraped by a cab driver and his friend. The case came to light when the uncle of the girl filed a missing person’s report with the police. The girl was spotted by night patrol in the wee hours the next morning and was handed over to a Bharosa Centre in the city, after which the police came to know that the girl had been raped.
That very day a 17-year-old girl was reported to have been raped by five teenage boys in a car after the girl had gone to attend a birthday bash three days before. The news shocked the city as one of the teenage rapists is the son of a sitting MLA of the ruling TRS party. As the shocking news was not enough, police dilly-dallying in arresting the rapists drew condemnation from political parties cutting across party line as the rapists belonged to influential families. The police have arrested three including two juveniles.
In the meanwhile, the police have maintained a studied silence, with officials refusing to divulge any information about the rape cases.
