The festive sseason brings with it an abundance of celebrations, social gatherings, and a calendar full of exciting events. While you prepare your wardrobe and plan your festivities, your skin deserves just as much attention. The change in weather, paired with makeup, pollutants, and erratic schedules, can take a toll on your skin, leaving it dull and tired.
Dr. Karuna Malhotra, Aesthetic Physician, Cosmetologist and Skin Specialist from Cosmetic Skin and Homeo Clinic, New Delhi shares her expert tips to help you achieve radiant, glowing skin in time for the celebrations. With over two decades of experience in dermatology, she understands the nuances of skincare and how to tailor it to festive demands. Here’s her step-by-step guide to skin prep for this festive season.

1. Start early for maximum benefits

The key to glowing skin is preparation. Start your skincare routine at least 4-6 weeks before the festive season to allow your skin to adjust and show results. Consistency is the magic ingredient, she emphasizes. Follow a simple yet effective daily routine of cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and protecting your skin from the sun.

2. Exfoliate, but don’t overdo it

Exfoliation is crucial for removing dead skin cells that can make your skin look dull. A gentle exfoliant twice a week will help reveal fresh, smooth skin. However, over-exfoliating can strip the skin of its natural oils, causing irritation and breakouts. Opt for chemical exfoliants with AHAs and BHAs for deeper penetration and enhanced results.
3. Hydration is the key
Hydrated skin glows from within. As we head into the cooler months, the air tends to dry out the skin, making it appear lifeless. Invest in a hydrating serum containing hyaluronic acid. “This miracle ingredient can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, making it a perfect hydrator,” she explains. Additionally, drinking enough water is essential to maintain skin moisture and overall health.

4. Antioxidants for radiance

Antioxidants protect your skin from environmental damage and free radicals, keeping it bright and youthful. Incorporating a vitamin C serum into your routine can work wonders for boosting collagen production and giving your skin a radiant glow. Apply it in the morning to combat sun and pollution damage throughout the day.

5. Don’t forget sun protection

Even during the festive season, sunscreen should be non-negotiable. Whether you’re attending outdoor functions or just stepping out during the day, UV rays can wreak havoc on your skin. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and apply it 30 minutes before leaving the house. Reapplication every 2-3 hours is equally important.

6. Prep for makeup

Festive makeup looks can be heavy on the skin, causing clogged pores and breakouts. A primer that suits your skin type to create a barrier between your skin and the makeup. A well-prepped base ensures your makeup stays intact while protecting your skin. Don’t forget to remove all makeup thoroughly before bed, using a double-cleansing technique if necessary.

7. DIY masks for instant glow

If you’re short on time or need a quick glow boost, turn to DIY masks. A honey and turmeric mask works wonders for brightening the skin and reducing inflammation. “Turmeric has antiseptic properties, while honey deeply nourishes the skin,” she adds.

8. Professional treatments for extra glam

For those looking for an extra festive glow, professional treatments like chemical peels, laser facials, or hydrafacials can be a game changer. However, Dr. Karuna Malhotra advises consulting a skin specialist well in advance to understand the right treatment for your skin type and concerns.
