A large sinkhole appeared in Lahore on Monday, engulfing three vehicles and injuring several motorists, leading to major traffic disruptions in Pakistan’s second-largest city. A viral video captured the scene, showing individuals trapped inside the sinkhole, which reportedly formed due to a leak in an underground sewer line.

According to Geo News, the incident occurred on a major road in Johar Town, where one car and two motorcycles fell into the sudden opening. Social media footage revealed one car positioned vertically within the sinkhole. Motorists trapped in the cavity were rescued using a wooden ladder.

A rescue worker spoke to The Nation, mentioning that two individuals in the car sustained injuries when the road collapsed. “The injured were taken to a hospital after being rescued by officials and locals,” confirmed a rescue official.

Recurring Problem

This is not the first time a sinkhole has formed at this location. Last year, a similar event occurred, injuring three family members when their vehicle fell into the sinkhole. In fact, this latest sinkhole marks the fourth such occurrence on the same road in Johar Town within recent months.

The emergence of yet another sinkhole has sparked public outrage towards road authorities, with some social media users dubbing it “Lahore’s annual sinkhole.”

“The road has become extremely dangerous for motorists, as sinkholes can emerge at any time, putting lives at risk. Look at this incident – the car fell in, injuring the driver and his friend,” a bystander told Dawn.

The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) attributed the sinkhole to a leak from an underground sewer line.
