In an optimistic address during the commemoration of Marathwada Liberation Day, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed hope that the Union government would extend crucial financial support for the ambitious Marathwada water grid project. He also revealed that he had already conveyed this request to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Marathwada, a region encompassing eight districts, once endured the oppressive rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad. However, through a determined uprising of peasants and ordinary citizens, the Nizam and his Razakar militia were defeated, leading to the region’s integration with India on September 17, 1948.
Chief Minister Shinde articulated the project’s goals, stating, «We are actively working on redirecting monsoon run-off water towards the Godavari river basin. The state government has allocated a substantial Rs 15,000 crore for the ambitious Marathwada grid project. We have also formally approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi for central assistance. I am confident that we will receive the necessary support from the Union government.»
He further emphasized the state government’s commitment to enhancing the region’s infrastructure, with several hundred crore rupees dedicated to road development and other crucial aspects in Marathwada. He assured the people that tangible improvements would soon become evident.
Marathwada has long struggled with development challenges, primarily due to inadequate rainfall. Chief Minister Shinde acknowledged the current agricultural predicament, noting, «The rains have momentarily paused, adversely affecting our farmers. Last year, when our farmers faced a similar predicament, we went beyond conventional measures and allocated additional funds to alleviate their hardships.»
In a significant move, the Maharashtra government convened its cabinet meeting in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly known as Aurangabad) on the preceding Saturday. During this meeting, CM Shinde announced a substantial package of Rs 45,000 crore earmarked for Marathwada’s comprehensive development. Additionally, administrative approvals were revised for irrigation projects valued at Rs 14,000 crore.
The Marathwada region encompasses eight districts, including Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad), Dharashiv (formerly Osmanabad), Jalna, Beed, Latur, Nanded, Hingoli, and Parbhani.
