To review the situation in Manipur, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has scheduled an all-party meeting for June 24. Since the skirmishes started in the northeastern state, this will be the first all-party gathering.

The meeting will take place at 3 pm in Delhi. The purpose of the gathering is to discuss the existing circumstance and potential solutions for reestablishing peace in the conflict-torn region.

”Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah has convened an all-party meeting on 24th June at 3 PM in New Delhi to discuss the situation in Manipur,” tweeted an MHA spokesperson.

The Congress has called for a “all-party meeting” on June 16 to discuss the violence in Manipur, claiming that the nation needed answers from the government over the out-of-control strife.

Separately, Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the Congress Parliamentary Party, made a call for peace in Manipur and said the unparalleled violence that has wrecked the state’s citizens’ lives has left a terrible wound on the conscience of the country.

“For nearly 50 days, we have witnessed a great human tragedy unfolding in Manipur. The unprecedented violence that has devastated the lives of people in your state and uprooted thousands has left a deep wound in the conscience of our nation,” she said in a video message shared by the Congress on social media.

“It is heartbreaking to witness our brothers and sisters who have coexisted peacefully turn against each other,” she added.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, met with the home minister earlier in the evening. The declaration was made following the assembly.

Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Imphal a fortnight ago and met with the chief minister of Manipur, N Biren Singh, as well as other political figures. He is also the convenor of the NDA’s Northeast chapter, NEDA (North-East Democratic Alliance).

Before Amit Shah, the union home minister, had visited the state and also established committees to look into the violent occurrence. The government has declared that the 32,000 or so central security forces would back the Manipur police in their efforts to put an end to the violence.

Prior to this, the top court emphasised the importance of taking appropriate action to return things to normal in Manipur in light of the lives and property lost there during the conflict between the Meitei and Kuki groups.
The Meitei people should be taken into consideration for the Scheduled Tribes list, the High Court ordered the State to consider on March 27.

The conflict in Manipur between the Christian tribal Kuki and the Hindu Meiteis erupted on May 3 following the organisation of a “Tribal Solidarity March” in the hill regions to oppose the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation.

The entire State has been engulfed in violence for the past month, and the Central government has to use paramilitary forces to put things under control.

The majority of Meiteis, who make up around 53% of Manipur’s population, reside in the Imphal Valley. Another 40% of the population is made up of the Naga and Kuki tribes, who live in the hill districts.

People are demanding security for their lives too. Since the riots broke out, everyone in the state is in fear of loosing lives. They are making videos and trying to get aware the government with the situation through social media.
