A new report from UN Women and the UN Office of Drugs and Crime reveals that home is the deadliest place for women. Every day, about 140 women and girls are killed by a partner or family member. This leads to around 51,100 victims worldwide in 2023. The number has slightly increased from the previous year.
The report, released on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, highlights the widespread problem of domestic violence. The agencies stated, “Women and girls everywhere continue to be affected by this extreme form of gender-based violence and no region is excluded.” They also emphasized, “The home is the most dangerous place for women and girls.”
Africa recorded the highest number of intimate partner and family-related killings, with around 21,700 victims in 2023. The region also had the highest victim rate, with 2.9 deaths per 100,000 people. The Americas and Oceania also saw high rates, with 1.6 and 1.5 female victims per 100,000, respectively.
On the other hand, Asia and Europe had much lower rates, with 0.8 and 0.6 victims per 100,000 people.
While most homicide victims are men, most male deaths occur outside the home. The report noted, “An estimated 80% of all homicide victims in 2023 were men, while 20% were women.” However, women and girls are disproportionately affected by lethal violence at home. Almost 60% of all women who were killed in 2023 were victims of intimate partner or family member homicides.
Despite efforts to reduce the killings, they remain “alarmingly high.” The report stresses that domestic violence is preventable, often caused by repeated gender-based violence.
The UN agencies urge countries to take immediate and effective action. They stress the need for better protection for women and girls from lethal violence in the home. Timely intervention is essential to prevent further harm.
