Reese Witherspoon Announces Elle, a Prequel to Legally Blonde

Legally Blonde enthusiasts, Reese Witherspoon has posted the first glimpse of Lexi Minetree as Elle Woods in Elle, an upcoming prequel series on Amazon Prime Video.

Witherspoon, who starred as Elle Woods in the original movies, made the announcement on Instagram.

“Harvard was hard. High school was harder. Our new series, Elle, is now in production! Couldn’t be more excited to introduce you all to @leximinetree as Elle Woods,” read her Instagram post.

The High School Life of Elle Woods Played By Reese Witherspoon

The show, per Variety, will transport fans back to Elle Woods’ high school years, with the experience exposing the audience to the moments that made her into the smart, goal-oriented woman that fans adored in Legally Blonde. Production on the series has also just started, Variety reported.

Lexi Minetree, who has been a frequent presence in small roles like in Law & Order: SVU and The Murdaugh Murders, will play her first lead role as young Elle Woods. Tom Everett Scott plays Elle’s father and June Diane Raphael plays her mother.

Elle Woods was a fashionable sorority president who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend. Throughout her journey, Elle challenges stereotypes, discovers her own legal acumen, and proves that one can be both stylish and intelligent.

The movie was both commercial and critical successful, earning $142 million globally on a budget of $18 million, and it has gone on to become a cultural icon for its uplifting message and comedic appeal.

The co-showrunners include Laura Kittrell and Caroline Dries, and Witherspoon is also an executive producer. The series is made by Amazon MGM and Hello Sunshine company owned by Witherspoon.

The Legally Blonde franchise began in 2001 with the popular film starring Witherspoon. The film was a favorite of pop culture, which then spawned a sequel, Broadway musical, and now prequel series.
