India secured its first-ever medal in women’s sepaktakraw at the Asian Games as the regu team claimed a bronze after facing defeat against powerhouse Thailand in the semifinals. The Indian women’s team, consisting of Ayekpam Maipak Devi, Oinam Chaoba Devi, Khushbu, Elangbam Priya Devi, and Elangbam Leirentombi Devi, lost with scores of 10-21 and 13-21 in the semifinals. To reach the semifinals, India had finished second in their group, following Vietnam. Thailand, the defending champions in the event, dominated the match, ultimately securing their victory. Despite the competitive spirit, the two teams took a photograph together after the match.
Hem Raj, the chief coach of the Indian team, shared, “Our players wanted to have a memory of their semifinal match against Thailand. They are the best players in the world, and it was a great moment for our team to play against them.” During the match, Coach Hem Raj had an argument with the referee.
In sepaktakraw, both semifinalists are awarded a bronze medal each. This historic achievement marked India’s first-ever medal in women’s sepaktakraw at the Asian Games and only the second for the country in the sport. Previously, the Indian men’s regu team had won a bronze in the 2018 Asian Games.
Sepaktakraw, often referred to as “kick the rattan ball,” is a dynamic sport with limited history in India. However, this victory represents a significant milestone, paving the way for further recognition and growth of the sport in the country. India’s successful performance in women’s sepaktakraw at the Asian Games underscores the dedication and potential of Indian athletes, raising hopes for a promising future for the sport on the national stage.
