A collapse on a section of highway in Southern China’s Guangdong province has resulted in the deaths of at least 19 people, as reported by Al Jazeera citing local media.

The incident occurred on the S12 highway between Meizhou city and Dabu county, where a 17.9-meter (58.7-foot) section of the highway collapsed at 2:10 am on Wednesday (18:10 GMT on Tuesday), trapping numerous individuals in 18 vehicles.

Al Jazeera, quoting CCTV, stated that “19 people have been confirmed dead, and 30 are receiving all-out emergency care in hospital.”

Officials have reassured that those who were rescued are not currently in danger.

Videos shared online by local news sources depict flames and smoke rising from a deep pit where the vehicles are believed to have fallen.

Approximately 500 individuals are currently involved in the rescue operation.

The cause of the collapse is currently unknown.
