Heatwave Alert: Bihar Shuts Schools Until June 15 As Temperatures Soar

Amid scorching heatwave disrupting daily life, Bihar’s government-run schools have been ordered to close until June 15. This directive comes in response to a severe heatwave warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), affecting various regions in the state from June 10 to 14.

The education department announced, “In response to the warning issued by the India Meteorological Department regarding heatwave conditions prevailing in several regions of the state from June 10 to 14, a holiday has been declared for all schools from June 11 to 15. All teachers and students will be granted leave during this period.”

According to the IMD, Bihar will continue to experience “severe heatwave” conditions over the next few days, prompting a red alert for both northern and southern regions until June 14. “It is highly likely that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions will persist in the southern and northern parts of the state until June 14. People are advised to remain indoors as prolonged exposure to the sun could result in heat-related illnesses,” stated the IMD’s Patna center.

Temperatures soared above 44 degrees Celsius in nine locations on Monday, with Buxar and Bhojpur recording the highest temperatures at 45.9 degrees Celsius. Other areas experiencing extreme heat include Buxar Arwal (45.7), Dehri (45.6), Aurangabad, and Bikramganj (45.5 degrees each), Gaya (45.1 degrees), and Nawada (44.9 degrees).

The IMD’s red alert serves as a critical warning to residents to take necessary precautions against the oppressive heat. Prolonged exposure to such high temperatures can lead to severe health issues, making it imperative for people to stay indoors and stay hydrated.

This heatwave has not only disrupted daily routines but also posed significant health risks, leading to the closure of schools as a precautionary measure. The government urges all residents to heed the IMD’s warnings and take appropriate steps to safeguard their health during this extreme weather.
