In a significant revelation, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar of Haryana disclosed that approximately 40,000 elderly individuals in the state have chosen to forego their pensions. This revelation came to light during a special discussion program led by the Chief Minister on a Saturday. The impact of this collective decision by senior citizens has left the Haryana government with an unanticipated surplus of around 100 crores in rupees.
Chief Minister Khattar expressed that the government, now endowed with these additional funds, intends to allocate the saved 100 crores for the construction of Seva Ashram. This shift in financial resources was made possible due to the conscientious choice of senior citizens who, despite being eligible for old-age allowances, opted not to avail themselves of this pension.
In the state’s proactive approach to providing financial support to the elderly, an old-age pension is initiated through a Family Identity Card (PPP). Those eligible for the pension, aged 60 and above, are actively approached to provide their consent for the commencement of the pension. This personalized and proactive measure ensures that eligible individuals receive the financial support they are entitled to.
During the discussion program, Chief Minister Khattar further highlighted the state’s commitment to the well-being of its elderly population. The Haryana government has taken steps to address the challenges faced by senior citizens in hospitals. A dedicated “senior citizen corner” has been established in healthcare facilities. This innovative initiative aims to alleviate inconveniences for the elderly, ensuring they do not have to endure long queues, particularly when obtaining prescriptions or collecting medicines.
As a further measure for the protection and welfare of the elderly, the Haryana government introduced the Sentinel Scheme. This initiative specifically targets individuals aged 80 and above. Ensuring financial support and care for this demographic, the scheme was incorporated into the budget for the current financial year. Complementing these efforts, a care and senior citizen service ashram has been established in Rewari for elderly individuals living alone. An additional ashram is currently under construction in Karnal, with plans for similar facilities identified in 14 other districts across the state.
Chief Minister Khattar underlined the collaborative efforts involving various organizations to cater to the needs of senior citizens. In addition to the government initiatives, the Red Cross Society operates old-age homes in Panipat, Ambala, and Panchkula. The Shri Mata Devi Mata Mansa Devi Shrine Board in Panchkula also manages an old-age home.Recognizing the importance of the elderly’s role in society, Chief Minister Khattar urged physically fit senior citizens to participate in social welfare through the Sentinel Scheme. This initiative provides a platform for them to contribute actively by enrolling as volunteers, further fostering intergenerational guidance. Interested individuals can register as volunteers by dialing 112, facilitating their engagement in meaningful activities that benefit both the elderly and the youth. Haryana’s proactive and inclusive measures underscore the government’s commitment to the well-being and support of its elderly population. The collective decision of senior citizens to forego pensions has not only resulted in financial savings for the state but has also paved the way for the development of essential infrastructure such as the Seva Ashram. As these initiatives unfold, they contribute to creating a more supportive and caring environment for senior citizens across the state.
