Despite the corona pandemic and tall claims of law and order by the police department, Haryana continues to have incidents of heinous crime which is a matter of serious concern. Amid claims of dip in crime, three murders are being reported every day in the state. The last two years’ data shows that a total of 2,264 murder cases took place in Haryana. Besides, kidnappings have emerged as one of the major crimes raising questions on the law and order. A total of 1,135 and 1,129 people were murdered in 2019 and 2020 respectively which clearly indicate the seriousness of the situation. Thus, the department seems to have failed to tighten the noose around the neck of criminals to some extent.

Besides, 7248 incidents of kidnapping were reported during the above time period, nearly 300 cases monthly and 10 cases on an average every day. Although, the departmental data shows an 18 percent decrease in this category of crime. It is pertinent to mention that in wake of fatal disease corona, lockdown was in force at least for 9 months in 2020 and people were asked to stay at home. It led to the minimum activities in all spheres of life. Thus, it is considered to be one of the factors responsible for the decreasing crime across the state.

“The police department is leaving no stone unturned to decrease the crime and to some extent; we have succeeded in doing so as the crime rate has been low as compared to previous years,” said Navdeep Virk, ADGP. Besides, the police employees put their best during the corona epidemic, he added.

It is worth mentioning that 1,671 government employees also fell prey at the hands of the criminals as they were attacked in the last two years. The numbers are increasing continuously as 883 such incidents were reported in 2020 compared to 789 cases in 2019. A total of 94 more cases with 12 percent increase surfaced what statistics reveal. It raises the issue of their security. Besides, 6,176 commoners were attacked by miscreants and criminals which led to serious injuries to many of them. In view of the ongoing scenario, the department is required to come up with a strategy so that the criminals can be checked.
